Coming back with a childhood staple, Disney has started a new generation of Disney shows. Disney has returned with High School Musical after 11 years, which premiered in 2008.
The ten episode series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is featured on Disney+. Taking place in East High, the show is a spin-off of the original trilogy of the High School Musical movies.
Released on Nov. 12, the TV show stars Joshua Basset who plays Ricky and Sofia Wylie who plays Porter. In the series, Ricky and Porter, including other students of East High audition for parts in the High School Musical musical.
The original three-part movie series follows the story of a transfer student named Gabriella who moves to a new town in Albuquerque. At the new school, she meets Troy, the basketball team’s captain. Through their passion for singing and acting, they overcome hardships and eventually perform for the school.
The series is not a continuation of the original movies, but takes on a new plot. The students of East High’s drama department decide to produce a High School Musical musical.
Although the plot and the cast have changed, the series is filmed in the original high school, Salt Lake High School East.
“I’m pretty excited to see how it will turn out. I hope they do the original movies justice since they were such a big staple of our childhoods,” said Leeza Dangazyan, a freshman.
