Victims of sexual assault triumph as Bill Cosby is sentenced for his crime of assault against Andrea Constand.

By Layla Williams , Staff Writer

For many years women and young girls all over the world have been raped. According to the Washington Post, one out of every five american women are victims of attempted rape, and 19.3 percent women have been raped once in their lifetime. Commonly, ages of victims range 10-21 years of age.

This needs to be stopped. Not only are women being raped, but the rapists often kill their victim after because they are afraid of being caught after the fact.

The well known comedian Bill Cosby was finally found guilty of sexual assault on a woman named Andrea Constand, an act he committed in 2004. Cosby is only just now receiving a sentence of 3-10 years for it.

It was reported that Cosby slipped some form of drug into Constand’s drink, causing her to pass out. Cosby then proceeded to have non-consensual sex with her. The fact that this happened and he’s only just now getting charged for it angers me. How did he get away with sexual assault for 14 years? It is too easy for a man to get away with rape.

Cosby, at first, was sentenced to 30 years, which is the maximum time for his crime. However, the judge knocked some time off due to his old age. Cosby is 81 years old and the jury felt he should be able to spend the rest of his time on house arrest. Cosby was sentenced to a maximum time of 10 years in state prison and was registered as a sex offender.

Age has nothing to do with it. Rape is rape. Did he care about the two women’s ages when he drugged them and forcefully had non-consensual sex with them? Of course not.

Regardless of age, I feel Cosby should have gotten his full sentence of 30 years. Most people who are famous think they can get away with things, such as this, because they’re eligible for bail 9 times out of 10. There is a good chance they will not be punished.

Although Cosby may die in prison because he’s already very old, rape is still a serious crime. And not only did he do it once, he did it twice. Clearly he didn’t learn his lesson.

Most women would rather fall into depression over sexual assault than speak out about it. This especially angers me because I’m a woman myself.

The problem with women is they’re too scared to speak up and tell somebody. Why would you sit there and just dwell on it? I know its hard for most people because it seems embarrassing to tell someone the disturbing news, “I was raped.”, but it’s a very serious issue. Tell someone your story so your attacker can be punished. Protect yourself and protect others. Don’t hide the truth.
