North West, Ye’s 12-year-old star. North West has curated a lot of fans and haters with being the daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. On May 1, North West dropped her first EP with six different tracks, called “N0rth4evr”.
West opens her debut EP with a sample from a 2006 emo song her parents probably know better than she does. From there, “N0rth4evr” goes loud, fast and bratty. The 12-year-old’s six-track EP came out on Gamma. It only lasts 11 minutes. It tries to do a lot in that time.
“H0w Sh0uld ! f33l” opens the EP by sampling Meg & Dia’s 2006 emo song “Monster,” then drops into rage. The Frampton sisters who wrote the original are listed as co-writers on North’s song. Through the entire song the 808s are booming, and the energy stays high.
My favorite song on the EP is “W0ah.” It has beating 808s and a beat that sounds similar to “Yeat.” I like this song because of its lyrics. They’re very in your face. North brags about all the fame and money she has (“I was born a star; I never had a choice”). It works. With having two insanely famous parents and being their first born, I’d have the same energy too.
Not every track works. “D!e” feels thin, and the opening is the reason. The sample that opens the track feels dead. From there it seems like North is just stacking samples without building from them. The sample on “D!e” doesn’t connect to the rest of the song. It just sits there.
The main problem with this EP is the sampling, North samples to sample. She doesn’t build with the sample. She just has it. Some of the songs don’t need to have a sample at all, but every track on the EP opens with one. It makes the whole EP feel repetitive when it should feel different.
This is the beginning of North West’s career, and especially her producing career. The energy is there, and I’m excited to see more of what she can come up with. This EP wasn’t perfect but for being 12 years old it was well made. My rating: 7.5 out of 10. Call it an emo rage EP and call it a start.
