On Saturday Feb. 25, gusts of winds caused by the Southern California blizzard knocked down three trees on the Van Nuys High School quad.
Some conditions of the blizzard include snowfall, heavy rain, and high speed winds. Weather warnings have recorded wind speeds of up to 35 mph.
Different reasons can lead to the uprooting of a tree. If trees are not planted in hard, compact soils, root systems are not able to create depth into the ground. If fungus is rotting the insides of the wood, high wind speeds can knock it down at any moment.
The news was shared to students through the VNHSMAGNETS Instagram page, as the news began to circulate fast. The post has currently reached 1000 likes, and 100 comments.
Students have coped in various ways. Junior student Adrienne Mita expressed her concerns about the quad as well as the animal life.
“I’m just very worried about where the squirrels are going to live now. Also, a lot of people eat their food where the trees fell. Where would they sit now?” she said.
Junior student Thomas Kim used tree puns and humor to cope with the situation.
“Wood’nt you know it. The winds were too strong fir the trees,” he said.
