BAND & DRILL: The Long Awaited “Agitation of Creation” Puts VNHS In Second Place of the LAUSD Band and Drill Team Championships.

The Van Nuys High School Marching Band and Colorguard placed 2nd in the annual LAUSD Band and Drill Team Championships on December 2 at East Los Angeles College.

Competing against 60 bands from other schools in California in the Division 2a, including Hamilton, Garfield, North Hollywood, Francis Polytechnic, and San Pedro, Van Nuys High School achieved an excellent score of 80.1.

Although San Pedro won first place, the school Marching Band and Colorguard managed to surpass each of their scores from the past eight years, including last year’s score of 4th place.

Just like their previous show’s themes, including African culture, birds, and love, this year’s performance, called “Agitation of Creation,” consisted of an introspective concept that produced an exceptional and unique story.

The show revolved around enslaved individuals who have been placed into the “bottom of the bottom” in society. However, they were soon let free by the upper society, played by the Color Guard, who showed them the ideal world of freedom and creation.

“This really is a joyous occasion and in our hearts, we have won first and this is really the best show I have performed out of my four years here.” – Noah Albert

The Marching Band practiced for three hours after school on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and each of the cadets devoted their time to practice on Saturdays for nine hours. However, Mr. Robert Eisenhart, the school’s instrumental director, allowed them to take Tuesdays off for their academic studies.

Each of the divisions within the band, including the drumline, brass, woodwinds, and colorguard, practiced in their individual periods in room 426.

Devoting their time and commitment for the Marching Band and Colorguard for four years, the seniors have anticipated for the show since their freshman year.

Their performance yet remains to inspire the younger classes about leadership and responsibility for their incoming years in the program.
