On Tuesday this week, President Donald Trump declared that “our nation is back” during his 2026 State of the Union address. The president’s State of the Union address included mixed celebration of economic gains with forceful calls for tighter immigration policies and stronger election laws.
Trump opened with a triumphant tone about U.S. economic performance.
“Our country is winning again,” he said. “In fact, we’re winning so much that people are telling me, ‘Please, please, please, mister President, we’re winning too much.”
The president repeatedly touted the economy as a cornerstone of his presidency. He claimed that the economy “is roaring like never before” and also mentioned how “more Americans are working today than at any time in the history of our country,” framing this as evidence of national success.
Despite this, fact-checkers later noted that while his claim is accurate, it doesn’t account for population growth. Additionally, the real GDP growth in 2025 was down to 2.2% according to a federal estimate. The unemployment rate has also increased slightly under Trump.
The president also highlighted his plans for trade and retirement. He proposed a new retirement savings program with the government matching up to $1,000 for workers without employer plans. He defended his tariff policy, calling the Supreme Court’s recent ruling against his tariffs “very unfortunate” while saying new tariffs “will be stronger than before.”
Furthermore, President Donald Trump called on lawmakers to stand if they support the idea that the job of the American government is to “protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” Republicans stood and applauded while many Democrats remained seated.
Trump also took a tough stance on foreign policy, especially when talking about Iran.
“I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon,” the president said referring to Iran.
He used strong language to show he plans to stay firm on national security.
Not everyone in the room supported his message. Many Democrats criticized the speech for being too partisan and some showed their disagreement by remaining seated during major applause moments or choosing not to attend at all.
Some of the loudest applause came when Trump honored members of the military and recognized the U.S. Olympic team. With the 2026 midterm elections coming up, Trump’s focus on the economy and strict immigration policies seemed aimed at energizing his supporters and strengthening his political base.
