What started off as a peaceful protest for human rights and economic hardships has become one of the deadliest crackdowns in years. As a result, people are now facing violence for demanding a better future.
The riots began on Dec. 28, 2025, initially beginning from economic hardship and growing inflation, but quickly turned into anger at the government’s political system. Protestors across multiple cities demand change while the government responds with violence.
The absurd rise in inflation has made the frustration worse as inflation rates are nearly 50% higher than last year and food prices have increased near 60%. Leaving families struggling to make ends meet.
In an attempt to suppress riots, Tehran, the capital city imposed a near-total internet black out on Jan. 8, 2026. This response shows how threatened the authorities feel, cutting citizens off communication from the outside world.
At least 2,571 people have been killed according to the Humans right Activists News Agency (HRANA). In addition to the deaths,18,100 people have been detained, indicating how far the repression has spread.
Iran has a history of previous crackdowns, in 2022, Woman, Life, Freedom and in 2019, fuel price protests (Bloody Aban). This isn’t a problem from the people but rather from a failing government that can’t listen to their peoples needs.
Instead of stopping protests peacefully, the government used live ammunition, beatings and mass arrests. Their actions show how far the government is willing to maintain control.
Iranian officials have tried to blame it on foreign interference, calling the protestors “terrorists” but in reality, it’s just citizens risking their lives because of the government not listening to their needs. Framing the protestors as the enemy shows a government that has lost touch with its people.
The Iranian government’s response is just morally wrong. By relying on violence rather than peaceful negotiation, the government is deepening the public’s resentment and destroying trust.
Despite the deadly crackdowns and black outs, the protests are continuing. Citizens are refusing to be silenced.
In the end, this crackdown will be remembered for how it was handled. True leadership isn’t silencing citizens, but listening to their needs.
If Iranian authorities keep this path of violence, it will create a generation of distrustful and fearful citizens. The consequences of ignoring people’s needs today could have long-term consequences for the country.
