Hosted by ASB, Multicultural Day is a day for various clubs to come together and perform cultural arts, sell food and enjoy the history of many countries.
With a fifteen-minute lunch extension, students can walk around and bask in the colorful day at the school.
Clubs put together performances such as Key Club’s reading of a poem about the country of Mexico, Vietnamese clubs danced to Vietnamese music and Korean clubs danced to K-Pop.
On top of the lively performances, the delicious smell of macarons from France, samosas from India and soul food from BSU filled the air as students gathered in lines to purchase these items.
ASB Multicultural Day commissioner Bryce Fuhrman-Chin explains his process in planning the event, and the strenuous process of getting signatures, planning and extending the lunch schedule.
“First we have to discuss it with School Based Management regarding time,” Chin said. “This is because ASB tries to have an extended lunch, and then we have to go to school meetings with other teachers so that we can have an extended schedule. Once the time is established, we can start working on our activity sheets which include signatures from teachers and administrators, so that we can have everything ready for the day of the event.”
Overall, the objective of Multicultural Day isn’t just to eat delicious food and watch performances, but also to give a spotlight to cultural groups who may not feel as represented at the school. This event provides an opportunity for everyone to appreciate the diverse population on campus.
Students came together and shared how they felt about this day.
“The performances were amazing, and this day was overall a unifying experience,” junior Ceanna Felicianno said. “We brought the world to Van Nuys.”
