Van Nuys High School is offering college-level finance courses which will start this semester.

This year, the school has partnered with Los Angeles Valley College to expand their dual enrollment program that will allow students to gain a certificate in banking and finance.

The certificate, awarded upon completion of the program, will prepare students for entry-level positions in the financial services industry. Such positions include bank tellers, insurance sales agents, brokerage associates and real estate agents.

College Counselor Ms. Dona Duke encourages all students who are interested in business and finance to join the program.

“The courses offered will give you a sense of what the business world is about and a sense of what kind of mindset you need to have when dealing with business and finance,” said Duke.

Ms. Duke discourages those who are not interested in business and finance from joining the program. She says the particular courses offered will not be of any use to students who do not want to join the business and finance world.

All students interested in enrolling must be willing to make a two-year commitment, attend in-person classes along with meetings on campus and have good academic standing.

Those who meet the requirements can sign up by filling out a Google form using the QR code posted in the Career and College Center Schoology Group. Only 40 spots are available.

Once accepted, participants will take a total of six college courses, worth 22 college units, throughout the course of two consecutive school years.

The first two courses students will take are Finance 008: Personal Finance & Investments and BUS 001: Introduction to Business.

Finance 008 will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:35 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and BUS 001 will take place on Thursdays and Fridays from 3:35 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Both of these courses will take place during the 2023 fall semester, starting on Sept. 8 and ending on Dec. 17.

Now that I am older the focus of my stories have shifted. As a staff writer for The Mirror, I write stories that focus on real people and what they have to say.  I have written multiple stories for the paper and I continue to search for new stories wherever I go.
