The art of dance and instruments came together.

The VNHS Color Guard and Instrumental Department hosted the Court Show on Thursday, May 24 in the Big Gym.

The Court Show consisted of performances by the Color Guard, Drumline, Rhythm Lab, Percussion Ensemble, Trumpet Quartet and Bach Trio.

The show featured a multitude of instruments that included percussion, trumpets, trombones, flutes, piano, guitars, cello, clarinet and bass. Visual aspects also made up the show as the Color Guard spun flags, sabres and rifles during their dance routines.

The Color Guard presented seven student-choreographed dance pieces to the songs “Only Hope,” “The Night We Met,” “Talia,” “Reflection,” “Dream,” “Beautiful Thing” and “Young & Beautiful.” The pieces included three solos, two full ensembles and duets.

Assistant Music Director Tim Duncan and Trumpet Player Sam Arias conducted the Rhythm Lab, who played five compositions: “Catch As Catch Can,” “The Suncatchers,” “Moon Indigo,” “Work Song” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

The Drumline performed four short pieces: “Van Nuys Cadence,” “Yella Stone,” “Ninja” and “El Camino.”

The Percussion Ensemble played four arrangements: “Escape Artist,” “Afta Stuba,” “Shock Factor” and “Saturday Morning.”

Sam Arias, Hannah Girad, Omar Olmos and Ricardo Piedra made up the Trumpet Quartet and performed “Malagueña.”

Originally played on violins, J.S. Bach’s “Concerto In D Minor” was played by the Bach Trio, which consisted of a trio performance by Ellie Serpas on the trombone, Sarah Mandt on the bass and Oshree Barak on baritone saxophone.

One of the highlights of the show was during the Percussion’s “Saturday Morning,” composed by Noah Albert, Jonathan Hakimian and Andrew Singh. “Saturday Morning” is a compilation of classic cartoon theme songs, including “The Powerpuff Girls” and “Danny Phantom,” on percussion.

The Court Show was concluded with a full ensemble of the Color Guard performing their final dance piece to “Young & Beautiful.”

“The overall experience of the show was amazing. I loved being able to put on my show face and give it my all to the crowd. We’ve put so much effort into making this show possible,” said Jessica Gonzalez, a member of the Color Guard.
