MUSIC: The otherworldly sound that takes Lucius back to their original roots.

Lucius, a four-piece indie pop band, released their new ten-track acoustic album, “Nudes,” on Mar. 2, 2018.

Founded by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, the band has become renowned in the indie community with the help of advertisements and by being featured in Spotify’s Essential Indie playlist.

Their most previous album, “Good Grief,” includes a variety of sounds that ranges from acoustic to heavy, deep synthetic sounds.

Restoring their original roots from their 2014 debut album, “Wildewoman,” most of the songs in “Nudes” now consists of calm, soothing acoustic stands with harmonious music.

“Recorded over two days at New York’s legendary Electric Lady Studios, NUDES is a collection of acoustic songs: new, from our back catalog – reimagined, and covers we’ve always wanted to record. It is a record paying homage to what has been… and a hint at what’s to come,” – Lucius Band

New tracks in the album that stand out are “Neighbors” and “Feels Like A Curse.” Both songs give audiences anxious and uneasy feelings, especially the first verse from “Neighbors”: “I always lock the door/ ’cause you never know for sure/Who your neighbors really are.” The songs include a hooky and heartbreaking melody that delivers a fragile vocal expression.

The album also features songs from their previously released music, including “Million Dollar Secret,” a single that was heard in the HBO series, “Girls.” It also consists of two tracks that were in their debut album, “Until We Get There” and “Tempest.” Although they generally sound the same, they still remain relevant to the album’s theme.

“Nudes” also includes a rebooted song, “Something About You.” Originally consisting of moody synths and dance-friendly beats in the previous album, “Good Grief,” the song is now stripped down with heavy acoustics and a genuine different vibe.

Two covers also appear in the album. Tame Impala’s popular song, “Eventually,” from the album, “Currents,” is a piece about a romantic relationship between two people. A relationship that damaged both of them, but in the end realized it was all for the best. The other cover, “Goodnight Irene,” is a Traditional Folk song by Lead Belly that has been covered several times by artist such as Jack White, Eric Clapton, and Johnny Cash. Featured with a bluesy take in the new album, the song really takes it away with Roger Waters, the bassist of the iconic band, Pink Floyd.

The message in Lucius’ “Nudes” reveals the ups and downs of a toxic relationship. It conveys the couple’s growing destruction and persistence of trying to build their connection — even through their faults.

It is truly a great essence for a somber indie folk album.
