MOVIES: “Ready Player One” will bring together all the pop culture phenomenon of your childhood.

Video games will be taken to the next level.

“Ready Player One” is an upcoming sci-fi action adventure film that will premiere in theaters on Mar. 29, 2018.

The plot revolves around a young outcast named Wade Watts who escapes his daily drudgery by logging onto a virtual massively multiplayer online (MMO) game called OASIS. Following his death, the game’s founder leaves behind a message that reveals a hidden Easter Egg in the OASIS. The players who finds the Easter Egg will be granted the creator’s fortune.

The film is directed by Steven Spielberg, known for his iconic works on “Jaws” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” and stars Tye Sheridan as Wade Owen Watts/Parzival, Olivia Cooke as Samantha Evelyn Cook/Art3mis, Ben Mendelsohn as Nolan Sorrento, Simon Pegg as Ogden Morrow/Og, TJ Miller as i-R0k, Mark Rylance as James Donovan Halliday/Anorak, Hannah John-Kamen as F’Nale Zandor, Letitia Wright as Reb and Lena Waithe as Aech.

“Ready Player One” will depict pop culture staples from the 80’s and 90’s, including “The Iron Giant” (1999), “Tron” (1982), “Back to the Future” (1985), and “Tomb Raider” (1996). The film will also feature current popular video games like “Overwatch” and “Halo.”


Michael Phung is a writer under the Entertainment section for the VNHS newspaper, The Mirror. He joined Journalism in the Fall Semester of 2017 and plans to stay until he graduates high school.

Michael likes to play computer games on his free time, especially League of Legends. When he isn’t playing games on his computer, Michael watches Youtube and Crunchyroll when he is bored. In school, Michael participates in many extracurriculars such as Red Cross, Good Neighbors, Math Club, and JROTC.
