ACADec Team Proceeds to State
ACADEC: Van Nuys advances to state after competing in the annual Academic Decathlon city competition.

After competing in the annual Academic Decathlon city competition on Jan. 27 and Feb. 3 at the Royal Learning Center, Van Nuys High School successfully advances to the State Competition in Sacramento.
The final results, announced on Feb. 11, placed Van Nuys seventh in the district accompanied with nine individual medals, validating them to compete in the state competition.
“In the end, I think we did a great job. All those long days of studying paid off!” states Captain Maya Peterson.
Upon hearing the announcement, the team wastes no time, immediately beginning to prepare for the California Academic Decathlon on March 22-25.
Shimla Rahman, the layout editor of The Mirror’s print publications, is in charge all production functions and operations for the newspaper. She is responsible for all layout and design responsibilities.
Shimla became layout editor in August 2017. In her junior year, she joined journalism to be more involved in her community and became the photo editor of The Mirror. Under Shimla, The Mirror staff placed third in the Design of the Year: Newsmagazine Page/Spread category for the December 2016 issue centerspread “All Hail the Hater-in-Chief.” Other than focusing on layout, Shimla enjoys writing opinion, features, sports, and entertainment articles.
