BASKETBALL: Van Nuys Alumni Go Against Current Basketball Teams
The Van Nuys Basketball Teams welcomed back past players, hosting an alumni game on Wednesday, Sept.20.
The Alumni Team went against every one of the four teams, JV and Varsity, Boys and Girls, reliving their nostalgia playing in Van Nuys.
First up against the Alumni was the JV Girl’s Team. #21 Angela Valdez displayed her smooth passing and clear court vision which led her team to a 13-11 win.
Next up was the JV Boy’s. Using their height advantage, the alumni dominated the paint early on. However the Wolves responded with several three pointers from #2 Andrew De La Hoya, who led the team with eleven points. In the closing seconds, a late game tying three fell short, allowing the alumni to prevail in a 23-20 win.
#2 Roselyn Poommai led the Varsity Girls as she displayed her court vision and unselfishness throughout the match. With unrelenting defense from both sides, the Varsity Girls were victorious in a 7-5 win.
The Varsity Boys vs Alumni game was action-packed with many highlights on both offense and defense. #2 Ethan Quiambao started off with penetrating the lanes and finding open picks. As the game progressed, #1 Tyree Winborn began demonstrating his various finishes at the rim and his accuracy from three. Winborn would finish with 37 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.
On defense, #4 Matthew Sykes had three monster blocks, as he completely dominated the paint throughout the match. The offense would eventually overwhelm the alumni as the Wolves triumph in a 74-48 rout.
