Van Nuys Falls Short in a Four Set Thriller
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Varsity, with five consecutive wins under their belt, loses their winning streak as Sylmar shuts them down.
Van Nuys (5-0) battled against the Sylmar Spartans (5-0) on Monday, Sept.25, for the number one slot in league standings.
The JV Girls would have a sluggish start, as inaccurate passes from the serve receive prohibited any hits. With miscommunication on defense and missed serves, the Wolves dropped the first set 25-17. In the second, the same issues would lead Van Nuys to lose 25-15.
With inconsistent passes on serve receive and confusion between the players, the Wolves lost the first set 25-13. A tug of war affair in the second set had both teams battling in long rallies.
Down the stretch, Captain Alex Dalumpines #7 aided the Wolves with key setter dumps, and they won 25-23. Sylmar responded in the third set, as their float serves kept the Wolves out of system. Taking full advantage of a scattered offense, the Spartans clinched a 25-17 win.
As tensions mounted, freshman standout Aileen Flores #21 had two solo blocks, blocking out the Sylmar hits. However, a late run by the Spartans dashed their way to a 25-21 win.
Final Score: 25-13, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21
