Sylmar Spartans Barely Squeak Past Wolves
GIRL’S VOLLEYBALL: Varsity hangs in for a five games, but loses last match by two points for a 3-2 defeat; JV empty-handed with 2-0 loss
The Van Nuys Girl’s Volleyball teams suffered a hard-fought defeat against the Sylmar Spartans on Monday, September 26. The Junior Varsity team was defeated 2-0, and the Varsity team went to a fifth game but lost 3-2.
The JV team struggled to create any offensive plays and maintain a strong defense throughout their game, resulting in a devastating defeat in both sets. The first set ended with a 25-6 loss and the second set end in defeat, 25-13.
Varsity Girls and Sylmar Spartans maintain an even foothold throughout the first set. Van Nuys prevailed and took the lead, finishing the set with a win, 25-22.
But the Spartans responded with a steady lead against Van Nuys on the second set. Van Nuys struggled to defend the opposing team’s overwhelming offense, losing the second set 25-16.
Van Nuys starts the third set with a 4-point lead and maintains that score with their powerful defense. The Defensive Specialist, Emily Tsaturian (26), and the Libero, Maureen Bompat (8), shined, receiving and saving many of the balls and eventually taking the win in the third set, 25-23.
The fourth set went in favor of Spartans. Van Nuys and Sylmar stay even until the second half of the set, in which Sylmar took the lead. Sylmar maintained their strong offense and gained a 7-point lead, 24-17. Van Nuys managed to close the gap, but could not defend against the last point, ending the fourth set with a loss, 25-22.
Sylmar began the final set with a lead against Van Nuys. The Spartans continued to lead throughout the set. Both teams demonstrated their powerful offense and impenetrable defense. The final set ultimately ended in a very close match, with the Sylmar Spartans stealing the win. Van Nuys closed the game with a defeat, 15-13.
Coming off of their loss, Van Nuys faces Canoga Park High School on Wednesday, October 5.
