Homework burdens impact student engagement

Balancing homework and quality material is key

Recently, there has been an epidemic in studying: students simply aren’t studying enough. Today, many students seem disengaged and unenthusiastic, especially when it comes to homework.

A lack of motivation is often the cause. Overwhelming workloads or confusing material can cause us to stray away from completing our work.

This is problematic because students need consistent practice to truly learn. Homework serves as a tool to reinforce concepts, keeping them fresh in our minds and helping us retain information for a long time.

Studying can feel incredibly tedious, especially when it’s forced or unscheduled. It can feel like an enormous burden, as if a dump truck has just dumped even its load on you. It’s not enjoyable.

Many of us would rather engage in activities we find more rewarding. Personally, I’d prefer to pursue a hobby or to relax. But we need to recognize the importance of studying — it’s essential for understanding concepts and analyzing ideas effectively.

Homework and studying should not be viewed as an enemy to fight. They are tools for growth and understanding.

There are many ways to improve our study habits, such as encouraging ourselves to study by having a reward system. Rewarding ourselves can help us stay grounded and can provide motivation to finish.

For example, once you finish an assignment, reward yourself with 30 minutes of relaxation or time spent on hobbies. This makes the effort feel worthwhile because you earned that time.

Another reason students may resist studying is a lack of confidence in their abilities. Perfectionism also plays a significant role. Some students avoid starting because they are scared of the end result.

While I do agree teachers sometimes overdo it with the homework, I believe there is a balance to be struck between the amount of homework and the quality of the material.

Review sheets, for instance, are a more effective alternative to traditional homework.

Review sheets present a variety of problems and offer helpful refreshers on what we’ve already learned. I never understood why teachers don’t give many or any review sheets at all.

Ultimately, studying and homework are crucial for a successful and rewarding academic experience. They demonstrate understanding and build credibility in the subject. Happy studying!
