Pop culture roundup: Miku joins Fortnite, 'My Shayla' meme rises, TikTok truths unfold
Hatsune Miku Added To Fortnite

The popular internet icon Hatsune Miku, a vocal synthesizer turned global sensation, was added to the battle royale game Fortnite in January 2025 as a collaboration between the game and Crypton Future Media. Many fans of the game or idol have anticipated this collaboration for years and she’s finally here!

As part of the collaboration, many Miku-related items were added to the Fortnite shop. Players could buy her skin costume as an in-game purchase of 1,500 V-Bucks, or buy a Miku collection pack with 3,200 V-Bucks. Alternatively, jam tracks are available for purchase containing iconic songs featuring Hatsune Miku, including “World is Mine” by ryo (Supercell) and “M@GICAL☆CURE! LOVE ♥ SHOT!” by SAWTOWNE.

‘My Shayla’

The video of the actor Tyrese Gibson crying over his custody battle for his daughter in 2017 has resurfaced in late 2024 on the internet as the ‘My Shayla’ meme. The meme itself takes a clip from the video with Gibson saying “oh my God, my Shayla” in a heartbroken voice, and applies it to varying situations that resemble the emotion of grief.

The audio itself trended across numerous social media platforms, and the meme remains relevant well into January 2025. The statement itself has been added to pop culture slang to represent pain and connection towards people or things.

‘There’s one more secret I feel I have to share with you’

With the one day TikTok ban on Jan. 19 many creators started to tell the truth about some of their most viral videos. One of the biggest examples was Charli D’amelio, one of the most famous Tiktokers ever, admitting that the vape pen she was holding in one of her viral videos was “not an anxiety pen” the claim that many of her fans made to defend her from the vaping allegations.

These influencers later came back after TikTok was fixed the next day apologizing for the lies and even backtracking, saying that it was all a joke.
