On Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) school board voted unanimously to fire 496 employees who refused to comply with the district vaccine mandate.
Of these 496 employees, 418 were employees who are non-credentialed, but critical staff members that filled positions such as instructional/teacher aides, janitors and cafeteria workers.
Most of those employees were likely placed on leave since Oct., as LASUD employees were required to have been fully vaccinated by Nov. 15.
On the contrary, only 85 percent of the student body in LAUSD schools are in compliance with the district-wide vaccine mandate leaving an estimated 34,000 students unvaccinated. Students who have not met the Jan. 10 vaccination deadline and remain either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated will be forced into the district’s independent study program and will not be allowed to attend in-person learning.
