When FBI agents pulled up to Alberto Carvalho's San Pedro home in February, they brought search warrants, black SUVs and no explanation. They searched the house and LAUSD headquarters downtown, then left without saying what they were after. The warrants stayed sealed. Two days later the school board placed the superintendent on paid leave and handed the nation's second largest district to a 28-year veteran.

IS THE STRIKE ON? Ballots are counted on Feb. 26, 2026 after SEIU Local 99, which represents education support workers, voted on a strike authorization measure. Members voted overwhelmingly 97% of SEIU Local 99 members voted to authorize an Unfair Practice Charge (UPC) strike. As of April 13, 2026, the district had failed to reach an agreement with the union.
