After back-to-back appearances in the CIFLACS (California Interscholastic Federation Los Angeles City Section) City Championships, the Van Nuys Boys Basketball Team hopes to continue its string of success into the upcoming 2018-2019 season.

With a championship in the 2016-17 season and a second place finish in the 2017-18 season, the Wolves are eager for a three-in-a-row championship push.

With seven returning Varsity players, Joshua Updegraph headlines the list as the last remaining player from the 2016-17 championship team. Updegraph, who plays the power forward position, is a force in the paint as he dominates the glass while altering shots at the rim. Based on his championship experience, Updegraph believes that focusing on the fundamentals of the game is essential to the team’s success.

“Fundamentals and not cheating out of practice drills is important. Skipping out on details might be the difference between winning a ring or losing at the buzzer,” Updegraph said.

With the season underway, guards Andy Sosa and Jesse Molina are ready to rise to the occasion. For Sosa, the confidence in his skills is the driving force of his game. Whether knocking down jump shots or slashing to the rim, Sosa is always ready to shoot his shot. As for Molina, his elusive dribbling and smooth jumper make him a serious threat on the offensive end as he can rack up points in a flurry.

After last year’s successful campaign, the Wolves will compete on the Division I level this season. The transition provides the Wolves with stiffer competition and chances to face some of the best programs throughout the CIFLACS. Despite the reality of a tougher path to the championships, the Wolves are still confident and eager to showcase their championship pedigree.

“The team is confident in our abilities and we trust Coach Porter in guiding us to success,” Updegraph said.

Adding on to their roster are the acquisitions of Senior Guard Kyeem Khabeer and Junior Shooting Guard/Small Forward JC Kankole.

Khabeer is a transfer player from Crenshaw High and is highly praised for savviness. His ability to lead the team and run the offense makes him dangerous to guard, as he facilitates the ball and knocks down buckets with ease. For Kankole his athleticism allows him to muscle his way to the rim and finish strong. Not shying away from contact, his slashing ability allows him to earn layups and ones.

With a talented and experienced lineup this year, the 2018-2019 Varsity Boys Basketball Team look to etch their names in history and bring another championship to the Wolves Den.
