A locker combination mix-up led at the beginning of the school year left Van Nuys students without any place to store their belongings.
On the first day of school, Tuesday, Aug. 15, some students were surprised when they were asked to clear out the lockers they were recently assigned on registration day.
Many students and staff were unable to open the lockers with the combinations that were given to them.
This commotion was caused by a mistake in the process of resetting the locker combinations from the previous year; not all lockers were properly reset.
Each locker alternates between five total combinations over a five-year cycle, ensuring that there is a new combination every year.
“For some reason, only some lockers were reset to the next combination this year. For example, while some lockers were reset to the fifth combination, others were still on the previous,” said Principal Yolanda Gardea.
The process of resetting the locker combinations began on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Until this process is completed and the lockers are redistributed, students are expected to carry their supplies and belongings.
“Because so many lockers weren’t changed, in order to keep students’ safety and privacy as our main priority, we decided to reset all the lockers so we were certain every locker was on its correct combination set,” said Ms. Gardea.
Locker combinations are expected to be redistributed to students during their first period as soon as all the combinations are reset.
