Students laugh and crackle, making slime, as junior Monica Llaga the president of Heart in Action walks around and joins in the fun. Llaga has already preplanned to do many more activities such as crafting to provide for kids and raise money for single women. In the very start of her club, her and organizers made a presentation how their club makes an impact within the community.
“Our club is basically about helping kids and single women, abused women and women who are in need and dealing with a lot,” Llaga said. “In the future, we plan to make kits, handcraft stuff and baskets. In our meetings, people contribute and we’ve donated to hospitals but also it’s not just for the club but also to help out the community.”
Llaga relished seeing everyone contribute and hear about the club she just started. The more people contribute and participate, the higher chance that her club can continue having many future meetings.
“The amount of people showing up will make it successful for more meetings and it will help us expand our club,” Llaga said.
The club had its first meeting on Feb. 25, 2026, focusing on helping people who are struggling. Members will participate by making handcraft items, providing thoughtful supplies, making a positive impact on people who need it the most.
This club not only helps the community, it also helps its own members. Members can add this club on their college applications to showcase their community service, leadership, compassion and community involvement.
There are 4 main positions in Hearts in Action: president, Monica Llaga, vice president, Zamaya Cole, Secretary, Kayden Noel and Treasurer, Mad Verzo. These club executives are in charge of managing, organizing and fundraising.
Llaga welcomes everyone at Heart in Action, hoping for more students to come and growth to show.
“I also want to grow our club by hosting at least one fundraiser and partnering with a local hospital or organization to make a real impact in our community,” Llaga said.
Starting a club like this is not easy, it takes a lot of effort and responsibility. Especially when it focuses on helping others create a positive change. Despite this, it’s Llaga’s mission to do her best to care for the women and children who are going through hard times.
“I realized that even small acts of kindness like handmade gifts or care packages, can make someone feel seen, supported and not alone,” Llaga said. “Receiving something handmade can remind them that someone cares about them and that they are strong. I think many would feel appreciated and hopeful knowing people took time to make something just for them to feel special.”
The dedication and sympathy behind Hearts in Action truly shows the impacts the club hopes to make in the community.
“Small acts of love can contribute to big waves of change,” Llaga said.
