Health teacher Mrs. Jessica Barcena has been teaching at Van Nuys High School for four years. This year, she continues to teach Health, a subject she is passionate about, as she works to guide students in making informed choices about their well-being and future.

Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Barcena contributes to the school community through her involvement in volleyball and softball, supporting students both academically and athletically. Known for her straightforward nature, she encourages students to stand up for themselves and take responsibility for their growth.

I sat down with her for five minutes to get to know her beyond her position as a teacher and our school’s competitive coach.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you.
I am a transplant recipient. My kidney is in the front near my stomach, instead of in the back, where my abdomen is.

What’s a cause or issue you’re passionate about?
I’m passionate about helping, making sure my students know that they have to stand up for themselves because there’s gonna be a time in their life where nobody is going to be able to stand up for them. They have to learn to advocate for themselves, whether it’s their health, their education, whatever it might be.

What’s the most memorable travel experience you’ve had?
I went on my first cruise this last spring break. I plan to travel way more in the future!

What’s an interesting job you’ve had outside of education?
When the restaurant Hometown Buffet was around, I did many things there. I was also their mascot at times, being the bumblebee at Hometown Buffet.

What’s a life lesson you’ve learned outside the classroom that you can share?
Probably to be responsible, but also to have fun while being responsible. It’s okay to enjoy your life, but just be aware of your surroundings.

If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead other than family members, who would it be? What would you talk about?
Marilyn Monroe. Just because her life was such a mystery.

If you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be and what’s your favorite dish from it?
Probably Italian! I love lasagna, like a hearty lasagna.
