Science teacher Ms. Peggy Shim has taught at Van Nuys High School for 26 years. She continues to teach honors biology and AP biology, sharing her passion for this subject with her students.

Along with teaching, Ms. Shim is the sponsor for many clubs here at our school, including Model United Nations, Junior Board and Christian Club. Ms. Shim has been known for her sweet personality and care for her students.

I sat down with her for five minutes to learn more about her personality and experiences beyond the classroom.

Do you have any children?

“I have one son, he’s in 7th grade and he’s 13. He’ll probably come to Van Nuys High School when he’s in 9th grade! Yeah, he just brings me so much joy right now.”

What is something most people don’t know about you?

“I was in a Mac commercial that didn’t air. I wanted to be a model, so I did informal modeling and some acting.”

What is a cause or issue you are passionate about?

“I believe that all children deserve to have the right to an education, shelter, food, safety and security. I think especially what’s happening with ICE right now is despicable, and I think people should have a right to security.”

What is a life lesson you have learned outside the classroom that you can share?

“Don’t let people bully you, stand up for yourself and respect yourself. Don’t let people take advantage of you and don’t let them shut you down.”

If you had to eat one cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be and what’s your favorite dish from it?

“Definitely Mexican food, and al pastor tacos.”

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

“The students! I love talking to students, I really love the students.”
