Tucked away in the heart of Van Nuys, Mercado Buenos Aires is more than just a market—it’s a cultural hub for the Argentine community in Los Angeles.
Though it may not be a massive chain, this small, family-run business has built a strong reputation among locals who crave an authentic taste of home.
“The Argentinian and South American community feel connected to our restaurant and the food that we have,” manager Jose Estrada said.
From its traditional Argentine groceries to its bustling restaurant, Mercado Buenos Aires brings the flavors, warmth and traditions of Argentina to Southern California.
Walking into the market, visitors are greeted by the smell of freshly baked empanadas and the sight of shelves stocked with Yerba Mate, Dulce de Leche and other Argentine essentials.
The market section carries everything an Argentine household might need, making it a go-to spot for anyone who appreciates South American cuisine.
What really sets Mercado Buenos Aires apart is its restaurant, where customers can sit and enjoy classic dishes like Milanesa, Choripán and perfectly grilled Argentine steaks.
“A big part of the culture is the quality of the meat,” Estrada said. “We serve plates like Lomo but focus on making sure the meat is high quality.”
Despite being a small business, Mercado Buenos Aires has gained a devoted following. Many customers, both Argentine and non-Argentine, return regularly for the food and the sense of community.
“I’ve been coming here for years, sometimes just to grab a coffee and watch a soccer game,” Ricardo Grempel, a longtime customer from Argentina, said. “Everyone here enjoys each other’s company — it feels like home.”
The restaurant is often packed, especially on weekends or during soccer matches, with families gathering over plates of Asado and bottles of Malbec.
“Argentinians are crazy about soccer,” Estrada said. “When they have a good game, they come here all crazy to celebrate and feel closer to the team and country.”
Conversations flow in Spanish, laughter fills the air and soccer matches play on the TVs, reinforcing the strong cultural identity of the business.
One of the biggest reasons for Mercado Buenos Aires’ success is its commitment to quality and tradition. The meat is carefully selected, the Chimichurri is made fresh and every dish is prepared with the same attention to detail you’d expect in an Argentine home.
“The quality here is amazing and the food always reminds me of home,” Grempel said. “Every dish is made just right, just like how we have it in Argentina.”
For many, eating here is more than just a meal — it’s a nostalgic experience that brings back memories of Argentina.
Over the years, Mercado Buenos Aires has grown, expanding to a second location in Granada Hills while maintaining the same family-oriented feel that made it special in the first place.
However, it remains a hidden gem to those unfamiliar with Argentine culture. For anyone looking to experience authentic Argentine cuisine, Mercado Buenos Aires is a must-visit spot in Van Nuys, proving that small businesses can have a big impact on a community.
