On the first day of school, a long line of students eagerly awaited their turn at the student store, only to be met with shock as they discovered a 50% price hike since last semester on their favorite snacks.
“Honestly I don’t understand why they would change it,” junior Abel Sanchez said. “I used to buy things everyday, but now it just seems like a waste. It’s just not worth the money.”
Though many believe that the student store is attempting to make a profit off student customers, there’s more going on behind the scenes.
“The price is going up through our Frito Lays vendor, so in order for us to compensate for that price increase we also had to change our prices,” Student Store operator Luis Cornejo explains. “We’ve noticed a change in sales sense. We still have sales, but it’s not the same.”
One big problem students are facing is having to make the choice between getting their snacks and getting home.
“I’ve been quite annoyed by the price rise,” senior Maria Robles said. “Now that the price has risen, it’s $3 for only two bags of chips, so I don’t get as many snacks as I used to, knowing I still need to have the funds for the bus ride back home.”
