After his first six weeks back in office, on Mar. 4th, 2025, President Trump addressed the nation in a joint address to Congress. In his congressional speech he touched upon weighing issues among voters and his plans for the future.
Early into his address, Texas Representative Al Green was ejected from the House for transgressing chamber decorum rules by disrupting Trump’s speech and protesting.
His escorting was trumped by rousey rounds of applause from the Republican side of the House—an ever present theme throughout the president’s speech as Republicans made their support for Trump’s administration clear.
In protest against the Trump administration, many Democratic women arrived in the House chamber wearing pink suits as they argued that some of Trump’s actions unfairly affected women. Many Democrats exited the chamber during the speech to show off the words “Resist” printed on the backs of their shirts.
In his address, the president covered some of his first acts in the few weeks of his presidency, discussing acts on immigration and securing the border which include focusing on more money for deportations.
He also acknowledged Elon Musk’s controversial position as the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) assisting with controlling waste in government spending.
“Thank you, Elon,” President Trump said, praising his billionaire friend. “He’s working very hard. He didn’t need this.”
Trump also addressed the relationship between the United States and Ukraine, a big concern for many Americans after the disastrous meeting between the two leaders a week prior.
The president said he had received an “important letter” from Ukraine’s leader President Vladimir Zelensky earlier that day, explaining he was ready to work under Trump’s leadership to end the war with Russia.
And finally, Trump covered his disputed decision to raise tariffs. However, in contrast with the ovations that Republican’s gave to his other policy objectives, many remained seated, showing signs of how Trump’s tariff policy has divided his party.
“Tariffs are about making America rich again and making America great again,” he said. “And it’s happening. And it will happen rather quickly. There’ll be a little disturbance, but we’re okay with that. It won’t be much.”
