The Wolves Softball team began their season with a hard fought battle against Hoover High School at a home game, ultimately falling 15-7. Although this was an unexpected outcome for the team, the game showcased standout moments that highlighted the team’s potential and left its players feeling proud of their work and thrilled for what’s to come.

“Some girls were playing for the first time, others were excited to be back on the field for their last year as seniors,” junior short-stop Ariel Puente said.

One of the main highlights of the game was when the Wolves were dominating in the key stretches of the game, where no runs were scored from Hoover’s pitcher. Back-to-back outs were made by the outfielder and the first baseman which aided the team in gathering momentum on the field.

It was through constant communication and support between teammates that helped players’ maintain their focus, make quick adjustments and quickly point out mistakes.

“We all had a positive mindset during the game, so that helped a lot,” junior outfielder Emily Villarreal said. “Plus, the team supporting each other and cheering really helped us stay positive throughout.”

Senior pitcher Yvette Canuto delivered a clutch hit that brought two runners home. While the junior outfielder Michelle Cadena, made an incredible catch to end the inning and get the team back on offense.

“It was definitely challenging having a new catcher and new girls playing softball for the first time,” Puente shared. “It helped us see the errors we need to work on a little extra in practice. I am very optimistic for the team making adjustments for wins as we continue the season.”

Despite the tough loss, the game has brought forth valuable learnings that will push these players further to become even better as the season progresses. Most of the players, including the new ones, quickly learned that constant communication and having each other’s backs plays a major role on and off the field.

“We learned a lot today, and we’re excited to put in the work during practice,” Puente said. “It’s not about one game. It’s about improving with every inning and working together as a team.”

The team is currently focused on their next match on Feb 27. against Castaic High School, driven by their teamwork and the lessons learned from this game. 

The Wolves are eager for their first victory.
