Playing for awareness

On Oct. 13th, the wolves celebrated the upcoming football game with a pep rally featuring performances from the band, cheer team and dance company.
PLAY FOR AWARENESS | The football teams made their entrance through a tunnel of cheerleaders. Later at the football game, the team wore pink socks as they played against Reseda. After winning 38-0, pink confetti rained down on the bleachers as the students celebrated the team's victory.

  • CHEER ON | The Van Nuys cheer squad performs their routines while the marching band plays along, rallying spirit for the football game that night. Cheer captains and seniors, Makaila Fulton, Mia Grassano, Skylie Molina and Alexia Gomez-Vigil helped lead their team in practicing their stunts and routines they learned at the USA Summer Camps.

  • READY TO RALLY | Senior Elijah Loox from Associated Student Body (ASB) starts off the pep rally, announcing information about the game to the students. The students coordinated the event with band, cheer and the football teams to make sure the event was a success.

  • GOOD RHYTHM | Junior Armando Pacheco takes center stage for a section of the dance, hitting beats in sync with the dancers around him. The group gave a high-energy performance, with the crowd cheering as they watched.

  • PASSION IN PINK | The Dance Company performs a hip-hop routine at the pep rally, going all-out with their movements. The dance was student-choreographed by Senior Ocean Threats, Senior Jurnee Joseph, Senior Danica Manarang, Senior Luanna Melgar-Benitex, and Freshman Anaya Loox.

Chioma Chiawa, a senior, is The Mirror’s Photo Editor. She enjoys making Italian inspired food during her freetime. She listens to the Weeknd when it’s time to relax after a long day, especially his 2012 “Trilogy” album. She is also obsessed with collecting vintage clothing items such as shoes and pants. After high school she plans on going to a nursing school where she is going to pursue her career as a nurse anesthetist. She plans to buy a house in Northridge before she turns 30.

Anthony Castaneda, a senior, is a photographer for The Mirror. Castaneda likes to play video games such as Fortnite and Valorant in his free time. Castaneda wants to become a film director when he graduates and he plans on going to film school. Castaneda’s favorite sport is UFC and his favorite fighters are Dustin Poirier or Alex Pereira. Castaneda’s favorite film is “Goodwill Hunting” and he hopes to make a film one day that is as good as that one.
Maya Diaz
Maya Diaz, Associate Online Editor-in-Chief
Maya Diaz is a senior and The Mirror’s online editor. This is her second year in journalism and she also has taken on the responsibility of being the program’s social media manager.  Outside of journalism, she is training to work in the music industry as either a producer or recording artist. Her other hobbies include studying arts and literature, crafting handmade jewelry, and video production. She leads the VNHS Choral Program as president and has participated in Van Nuys’ rich digital media, theatre, and instrumental programs as well. After high school, she is committed to attending Loyola University New Orleans to pursue a degree in popular and commercial music.
