The Bottom Line | Baseball faced off against the Panorama Pythons on Thursday, April 18, and squashed them 16-3.
Highlights |
- The Pythons needed to change their pitcher three times throughout the game because none of them could stop the Wolves from scoring runs.
- Very few of the Wolves’ runs were scored from walks, a free base when a pitcher throws four balls.
- The Wolves’s amazing defense was on full display in the first three innings, keeping the Pythons scoreless until they scored three runs in the fourth inning from walks.
- The Wolves called up Johnny Hernandez, a junior varsity pitcher, to start on the mound. He struck out four Pythons during the three innings that he pitched.
- Hernandez began to falter in the fourth inning, so varsity utility player Kevin Mata stepped up and pitched the remainder of the game, finishing with three strikeouts.
- The infield showed amazing teamwork, with shortstop Nate Renard and second baseman Alexis Martinez converting Hernandez’s ground balls into outs.
- Martinez communicated well, calling out the play before each pitch and signaling his outfielders which base to throw to.
What’s Next | The team’s next games are against the San Fernando High School Tigers on Monday, April 22 at home and away on Thursday, April 25.
Team Thoughts | “Before the game started, I had the mindset of going in to do damage and to end the game early,” varsity catcher Edward Islas said. “I’m glad we came out with a win, but I know the team and I would have wanted to get more runs.”
Our Thoughts | The team had extra time after their first game against Panorama High School was canceled due to rain, and they rightly took advantage of it to win. This victory rounds out their three-game winning streak, counting their wins against the Canoga Park Hunters and the Vaughn Tigers. The team is carving its way to playoffs through rigorous practice and vigilant determination, so be ready for the team to come in hot for the remainder of their season.
