WHY: To test their career skills and qualify for nationals
HOW IT WORKS: Founded in 1965, SkillsUSA is a nonprofit organization that strives to empower and enrich students from middle school to college in order to develop personal, workplace and technical skills that would help them in their professional careers. Every April, California hosts the SkillsUSA championship alongside the State Leadership & Skills Conference (SLSC). Beginning at a local chapter level, competitors progress through district and regional competitions. Each student is able to choose the competition they would like to showcase their skills in and adhere to different guidelines outlined in the competition of choice. Winners awarded gold, silver or bronze not only obtain access to scholarships, job offers and tools but also advance to the national conference that is set to take place on June 24-28 in Atlanta.
