Lunchtime debate: Is Gen Z lazier than other generations?

Dwayne Famenia and Mr. Ferrin faced off at the big gym to debate the question of whether Gen Z has become lazier compared to past generations.

On Dec. 8, 2023, JSA and ASB held a student versus teacher debate, on the topic of whether Gen Z has become lazy.

Multiple teachers offered extra credit for attendance to watch junior Dwayne Famenia face off against United States history teacher Mr. Jacob Ferrin during lunch. The debate followed a classroom debate structure, with Mr. Ferrin opening and Famenia following. They then had a four-minute-long open rebuttal, with closing statements being held at the end.

Tickets were available for $1 during the pre-sale, with prices increasing to $2 at the door. The joint operation between ASB and JSA had positive results, with students cheering on Famenia.

While Mr. Ferrin relied on his statistics for argument, Famenia cited UC Berkeley’s research on South Korean students’ work hours, which gave the latter massive support from the young audience.

Even though the debate turned into a screaming match towards the end, students still found it entertaining to watch.

“I definitely think that it was worth a dollar,” senior Elizabeth Egu said. “I think I got my money’s worth.”

According to Famenia himself, he believes that Mr. Ferrin won the debate.

“He won it though, I know when I lose and I definitely lost, it is what it is,” Famenia said. “He’s a great speaker and a great guy.”
