“Gay” isnt a bad word, stop acting like it is.

Legislators in Florida are trying to prevent discussions of sexual orientation and gender in elementary schools. If passed, it may set a precedent that would erase decades of civil rights work and threaten our generation.

The “Don’t say gay” bill being considered would prevent free conversations and exclude people on a personal, individual level.

Florida is pushing for a new bill to pass that prohibits discussions on topics such as sexuality and gender identity in elementary schools. Parents are allowed to sue schools if they hear that their child is learning about these topics in class. This is very harmful for young children’s developing minds. Questioning one’s sexuallity and gender is natural, even at a very young age.

It should be normalized to discuss LGBTQ related topics in schools because you never know who will relate to them. Many like to argue and say that it’s “pushing the gay narrative onto our kids” when in reality, people will question who they are no matter what. With it being installed into normal discussions in school, it will help children feel safe to actually speak up when they have these series of questions about their identity.

Leaving out these topics can make a child feel abnormal which can lead to internal discomfort.

Let’s discuss the true problem here. People don’t seem to recognize LGBTQ+ relations as anything but sexual. They hear the word “gay” and immediatly see it as someting negative.  If people didn’t, Florida wouldn’t even try and bring this up as a necessary issue. It limits homosexual people to only being perceived as sexual beings which is damaging in many ways.

School is the best place to enforce the narrative that all relationships and identities should be accepted and recognized.

Taking away someone’s right to knowledge on a subject is more harmful than educating them on topics most feel uncomfortable with discussing. Where there is a will there’s a way. Children can put themselves in danger when trying to obtain the information they want.

A majority are only left with searching online where many twisted versions of the answers they yearn for will fill their brains instead. They can be exposed to false information. Articles provided here show that the lack of homosexual/gender related topics in health courses results in children being in harm’s way.

If topics on homosexuality were installed into school cirriculum, children can be educated on the correct information safely.

It is an ongoing battle against homophobia that still holds strong in today’s time. It should never feel wrong to love the person you want to love or identify as the person you want to identify as.

For people to believe that young children will find these topics confusing is absurd because it’s more confusing to not be educated on who you are. Teaching this at a young age helps those children to grow into educated adults that might help turn this world around for the better.
