Ventilators have become a critical tool for keeping covid-19 patients in critical condition alive.
A ventilator helps a person breathe. It does this by delivering oxygen to the lungs through a breathing tube.
In patients with coronavirus, the body’s own immune system causes the lungs to fill with fluid, leaving little room for oxygen. A ventilator supports breathing by supplying more oxygen to the lungs than a person can inhale on their own.
Hospitals are struggling to keep up with the high demand for ventilators as covid-19 cases continue to surge.
The infographic above explains how ventilators work in assisting covid-19 patients.
