Pop culture update: Meme influence and fan dynamics shift
‘Queen Never Cry’

‘Queen Never Cry’ is an internet meme that originated from the Korean comic “The Ki Sisters,” created by Bumbae. It features a sequence of four panels from Chapter 34, in which a mother who just went through labor whispers to her newborn baby that “queen never cry.” To many, the broken English phrase and uncanny expressions of the characters in this scene create an impressionable, yet humorous tone.

The meme took the internet by storm, spawning numerous derivatives with different fandoms. Users have referenced the phrase with other scenarios as well to match the same energy as the original comic.

@bookisht3a I don’t even need the context 😭 #queennevercry #kisisters #manhwa #melaniatrump #fyp #diva | Manhwa is called Ki Sisters and it’s available on @webtoonofficial ♬ original sound – My Legs Just Divorced🦵🏻

‘Chill Guy’

Another internet meme that regained viral popularity is ‘Chill Guy,’ a two-dimensional character drawn by Phillip Banks (@PhillipBankss on Twitter). Banks’ captioned the original post in 2023 with “my new character,” including an image displaying an artwork of an anthropomorphic dog in modern clothing with a smirk on his face. It wasn’t until August 2024 that the image became viral due to numerous users reposting the artwork. Users resonated with the laid-back attitude of the artwork, and began applying the image to other scenarios.

While the meme died down, it resurged in November 2024 and was turned into a cryptocurrency coin by people unaffiliated with Banks. Banks then denounced the meme coin and copyrighted the ‘Chill Guy’ artwork, allowing non-profit use only.

#SwiftieRacism

Billboard, a prominent American music magazine, recently dropped the list “The Greatest Pop Stars Of The 21st Century,” featuring the top 25 pop artists. Many had predicted that Taylor Swift would take first place on the chart, as her previous track records on Billboard’s charts had shown her as the most popular pop artist. However, fans were outraged when Beyonce took the spot instead of Swift.

As a result, a barrage of posts against Beyonce spread online, namely racist remarks against her and her family. In response to the hate, Beyonce’s fans began the #SwiftieRacism trend in order to highlight how morbid and obsessive Swift’s fan base was. Ironically, Beyonce and Taylor Swift have been friends for over a decade. Neither pop star has commented on the controversy as of now.
