California State Park Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve in Antelope Valley, Lancaster, is one of the many locations that features the superbloom, more specifically, a high proportion of California poppies, which paint the desert hills in a flurry of orange, yellow and green.
-
The California superbloom only lasts throughout spring and early summer from March through early June and can only happen again once every 10-15 years after a tremendous amount of rainfall.
-
Due to the continuous rainfall and stormy weather all throughout California in January through February, a rare desert phenomenon where a high proportion of wildflowers bloom, also known as a “superbloom,” can be seen all throughout California.
-
Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve is not the only place to witness the superbloom. Other parks and parts of the California desert such as Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Point Dume Natural Reserve are all places to visit to witness the superbloom.
-
Besides the California poppies, Antelope Valley also has a variety of other wildflowers supported by the superbloom such as owl’s clover, lupine, goldfield, cream cups, and coreopsis.
A fiery field of flowers blooms over California
After multiple weeks of continuous storms and rain, California finally experiences its once in a lifetime “superbloom.”

Beverly Regino, Creative Director
Beverly Regino is the Creative Director for her third and final year in journalism as a senior. She is in charge of photography, layout, graphic design, and social media. An artist at heart, her main passions include drawing, painting, and dressing up, with a side of playing single-player story-driven video games and listening to music. After graduating, her goal is to get into either college: ArtCenter College of Art and Design or Laguna College of Art and Design and pursue a job as a concept artist for video games and film. But of course, her main dream consists of owning at least two high-quality light sabers and running away into the sunset with the love of her life, Bella, her white chihuahua.
