Grecia Barrera shines with dedication to softball and teammates

Junior Grecia Barrera, a two year first baseman draws her softball inspiration from her mother, who was a dedicated athlete in her own right. She learned the importance of strength, determination and leadership.

“I grew up watching my mom play the sport,” Barrera said. “I also wanted to see why she liked it so much.”

As a freshman, joining a softball team seemed intimidating, but luckily being surrounded by amazing teammates makes the sport more exciting.

“My freshman year on junior varsity (JV) was such a great experience,” Barrera said. “I was surrounded by great teammates that made the game way more fun.”

Jumping into varsity the following year definitely levels up the game toughening the skill but making it a fun-filled experience.

“My varsity year has been fun,” Barrera said. “It’s a different experience compared to JV but I’m still learning different things.”

Before every game, the simple but powerful pre-game routine that helps her stay grounded and focused is taking a moment to pray centering herself and reminding herself that the game is just one part of her journey. Trusting her training and focusing on the present moment, she stays relaxed. Ready to play her best.

“I have to pray before any game,” Barrera said. “It helps me not overthink before my games.”

The toughest challenge she faces isn’t the speed of the pitches or the intensity of the game, but the battle within herself after striking out. Overcoming this inner critic, reminding herself that one strikeout doesn’t define her worth and trusting in her strength to bounce back, is the true test.

“My biggest challenge would be not bringing myself down when I get a strike.” Barrera said.

She isn’t just dedicated to her sport, she thrives on balancing multiple athletic pursuits, constantly challenging herself to grow physically and mentally. During the off, while others may be taking a break, she remains committed to maintaining her fitness and honing her skills across a variety of sports.

“Honestly I play multiple sports,” Barrera said. “So to stay motivated when I’m off season I just run and keep working out on myself to do better.”

During the heat of a game, when the pressure is high and the mistakes tend to weigh heavy, she steps up to remind her teammates of their strength.

“I always tell them they are capable of anything,” Barrera said. “I tell them to keep their head up and to ignore all the negative things.”

Softball has taught Barrera valuable lessons that extend beyond the field. She reflects on how the game has instilled in her the importance of patience both with herself and the process.

Softball has always taught me to be patient,” Barrera said. “To always keep my head up no matter the mistakes I make because the softball will always find me in every play.”

Softball has been a powerful teacher in helping her become the best version of herself. Through long practices, tough games and the inevitable setbacks, she’s learned the art of patience both with the game and with her own progress.

“I would say that it has helped me to be patient,” Barrera said. “To always give the best version of myself.”

As the season unfolds, Barrera approaches every game with a positive mindset, determined to enjoy every moment on the field. Whether she’s sprinting to catch a fly ball or swinging for the fences, her focus remains having fun and embracing the game.

“I just want to finish the season always with a smile on my face,” Barrera said. “Always having fun in and out of the field.”

Barrera’s passion for the game shines through in every play, every practice and every challenge faced. Whether on the field or off, her dedication to softball reflects a true commitment to not only mastering the game but also enjoying every moment of the journey.
