As sweater weather approaches, when the air begins to chill and the leaves start to fall, preparations must begin for the truly best time of the year: autumn. Alongside the cozy clothes and pumpkin pie, an exciting Halloween and a heartwarming Thanksgiving, we simply can’t overlook the seasonal films and shows. Some are homely classics and others are spooky thrillers, but all of them elevate the fall experience. Without further ado, here are some of my recommendations for the best autumnal movies and shows.
TV Shows:
“Gilmore Girls”
An obvious pick, “Gilmore Girls” is mentioned in practically every article for fall binge recommendations. This early 2000s show set in a dreamy Connecticut town offers an amusing look into the life of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory. Perfect for the season with its pleasant autumn vibes, “Gilmore Girls” is a classic must-watch.
“The Vampire Diaries”
Featuring two vampire brothers and a beautiful girl, “The Vampire Diaries” is a heart-quickening drama that does justice to everyone’s favorite trope- the love triangle. Come along for the ride as Elena, Damon and Stefan navigate their wonderfully complicated relationships. And if you end up loving this show and its characters, you’ll want to check out its spinoff, “The Originals.”
“One Tree Hill”
After he gets a spot on the Tree Hill basketball team, Lucas Scott ignites a sudden feud between himself and his distant half-brother, Nathan. This series follows a group of friends from their high school years all the way into adult life, featuring their relationships and struggles and successes. Despite the longevity of this nine-season show, “One Tree Hill” draws viewers in with its array of characters and dramatic storylines. While a number of these plot points are exaggerated (spoiler: a high school marriage), that’s what makes the show so delightful.
Movies:
“Good Will Hunting”
A therapist helps guide an intelligent but unmotivated college student to achieve his full potential. With its autumnal atmosphere and university setting, “Good Will Hunting” is a great pick to welcome the cozy season. Written by Hollywood legends Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who also star in the movie, the film is praised for its script and characters. Robin Williams plays the enigmatic and empathetic therapist who helps Will discover what he wants in life, in what is often considered to be his best performance.
“Twilight”
No list of the most famous teen movies ever made is complete without “Twilight.” This romance-driven fantasy follows Bella Swan, who, upon moving to Washington, meets the mysterious Edward Cullen. This five-movie series was an instant hit that remains a staple of pop culture to this day. Complete with almost every teen movie stereotype imaginable, the “Twilight” saga sells a dramatic storyline accompanied by a wonderful atmosphere of escapism. A pioneer for modern vampire media, we have these movies to thank for productions like The Vampire Diaries.
“Harry Potter”
One of the most famous movie franchises in the world, the “Harry Potter” movies are filled with enough magic and suspense to keep viewers endlessly entertained. Darker color schemes meet higher-stakes adventures in the third (and best, in my opinion) installment of the series, “The Prisoner of Azkaban.” Full of muted color schemes and thrilling escapades, these movies prove to be excellent picks if you’re looking for something enchanting to binge during the fall season.
“Dead Poets Society”
Another classic featuring Robin Williams, this film follows a group of boys at an elite boarding school and their new English instructor, who inspires self-discovery through his unorthodox methods of teaching. Through the eyes of these students, we explore the profound dilemma of either conforming to society’s expectations or taking risks to stay true to your character. Sporting a dark academia aesthetic and shining a spotlight on the beauty of poetry and literature, “Dead Poets Society” offers a compelling experience that just might leave you crying.
“Coraline”
Coraline Jones is an outsider in her own family. So when she discovers a secret door in her new home that leads to a seemingly perfect world full of the enjoyment and affection she craves, it feels like everything is turning around for the better. Delving into the themes of illusion and deception, this animated stop motion film highlights the dangers of failing to question what lies beneath the surface. Grab some popcorn and settle in as you enjoy this timeless blend of unsettling thriller and dark fantasy.
