A heroine is joining Hollywood.
As fans anticipate the aftermath of “Avengers: Infinity War,” Marvel Studios released the trailer for “Captain Marvel,” an upcoming sci-fi action film that will premiere in theaters on March 8, 2019.
The studio’s first female-lead superhero film is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and takes place in the 1990s, nearly two decades before the events of “Iron Man” (2008).
The story follows former U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who gains superhuman abilities after an accident combines her DNA with that of an alien, transforming her into one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. Carol gets involved in the Kree-Skrull War, a galactic war between two alien races, as she joins Starforce, a Kree military organization. The trailer has accumulated over 109 million global views in the first 24 hours after its release.
The opening footage displays the 90’s era with Captain Marvel falling on a Blockbuster Video store from the sky. The preview also includes a young Nick Fury, whose eyes are intact, and a young Phil Coulson, who faces his death in “The Avengers.”
The trailer features glimpses of the Kree, Skrull and an alliance between Captain Marvel and Fury. It concludes with an epic shot of Captain Marvel using her abilities to its full effect as she embodies the iconic red-and-blue costume from the comic books.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who are known for their collaborative works on “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” and “Mississippi Grind,” “Captain Marvel” stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Jude Law as Walter Lawson/Mar-Vell, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Gemma Chan as Doctor Minerva, Lee Pace as Ronan, Djimon Hounsou as Korath and Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson.
