From L to R: Jonathan Kim, Joshua Murphy, Lucca Riley, Aidyn Kinchen and Devin Brown huddle together and quickly talk strategy after scoring a point.

The Bottom Line | On Monday, April 8, boys volleyball battled against San Fernando High School, who are currently in last place in the Valley Mission League, and defeated them with ease, winning in three sets

Highlights |

  • In the first set, the Wolves were unstoppable on offense. They got multiple kills that the opposing team couldn’t dig, ultimately winning the first set 25-13.
  • The Wolves’s powerful offense dominated the next two sets. Their defense also played a role in their dominant win, resulting in winning both sets two and three with a score of 25-18.
  • Opposite hitters senior Devin Brown (#3) and sophomore Aidyn Kinchen (#17) contributed a lot to the Wolves’ points, scoring multiple kills against the Tigers.
  • Junior Christian Callos (#34) also helped the team immensely, setting his teammates up for kills and even getting points of his own from his dumps.
  • Junior and libero Joshua Murphy (#7) helped the Wolves’s defense by receiving some of the opposing team’s serves as well as being able to dig up the ball from attacks by the other team.

What’s Next | After a dominant win, the team plans to take this motivation towards their next game against Reseda High School, whom they lost to in four sets the last time they met. This game will occur on Monday, April 15, at home due to Reseda’s gym being unavailable.

Team Thoughts | “I think the team played really well against San Fernando,” setter Christian Callos said. “If the team continues to push hard and play as amazing as we did this game, I could see a bright future ahead of us.”

Our Thoughts | It is evident that boys volleyball has stepped up their game from the start of the season. When everyone was focused and communicating with each other, they proved to be a strong team, as they executed their plays and fundamentals beautifully. When they overcome certain barriers, as they did in this game, they can trash their competition, giving them a huge chance of getting far into the playoffs.

About the Contributor
Jaden Gervacio
From watching sports to playing them, I have always been inclined to write about the new athletic events that occur at our school. As a sophomore at Van Nuys High, I am going into my second year of journalism, not just to write about the games, but to uncover the background and details of the talented athletes that play them. Whenever I’m not on my laptop typing about an athlete or game, I am trying to perfect leche flan.
