Player Sinai Barajas attempts to block the El Camino Real’s shot at scoring another point. In the match on Jan. 10, the girls beat the Royals 8-7.

The bottom line | The girls water polo team snaps their three game losing streak in an 8-7 dogfight against the El Camino Real Royals on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Highlights |

  • The Wolves were in for a back and forth and intense game against the similarly skilled Royals.
  • The score was neck and neck each quarter with each team gaining the upper hand on the other constantly. Not one team had an obvious lead on their opponent throughout the entire game.
  • Sophomore Leena Gonzalez played amazing defense as the Wolves’ goalie, blocking 15 of the 23 shot attempts at their goal.
  • Seniors Kimberely Perez and Sinai Barajas led the team’s offense by scoring a majority of their goals.
  • At the end of the final quarter, senior Cameron Camarena scored the game winning goal for the Wolves, giving them a 8-7 victory against the Royals.

What’s Next | On Friday, Jan. 12, the Wolves journey to the Eagle Rock Eagles’ turf to gather a second straight win. Afterwards, they venture back home to host the Granada Hills Charter Highlanders on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Team thoughts | “Today’s game was amazing. El Camino matched our team’s skill perfectly so we were able to fight for the win,” captain Lorena Guevara says. “Throughout this game, the score was back and forth. Either we would get the upper hand, then they would tie, or they’d get the upper hand and we’d tie it up.”

“This win definitely gave our team the confidence boost we needed to continue to work hard,” she continued. “After the game we all hugged and celebrated our first win! Even with our victory, we see a lot of room for improvement and we all look forward to working on those particular points and skills.”

Our thoughts | With the progress the girls water polo team has made, a hot streak is right on the horizon for them. The Wolves fought valiantly through their match versus the Royals and came out on top. Having both the defense and offense contributing heavily paved the way for the Wolves to earn their much deserved win. Along with the improvement of the girls’ skills, the confidence from finally winning a game is going to propel them to a winning record in no time.

From playing Mozart’s sonatas on my upright Yamaha to watching a baseball soar into the bright day sky from my bat, I’ve always been driven to be the best. As a rookie journalist, I aspire to take my same dedication to become a noteworthy and dependable writer. With every story, I will report facts in an entertaining fashion with the hopes of drawing readers. When I am not honing my journalistic craft, I can be found at my piano, on the Van Nuys baseball field, or in my kitchen elevating my homemade ramen.

Even though I will most likely never fulfill this dream, I could totally see myself as a florist and possibly owning a flower shop. Whenever I receive flowers I love to preserve them and keep them around as decoration. I find taking the time to arrange the flowers in a visually appealing way very calming. As a first-year senior in journalism, I am glad to say I am a photographer and I am excited to be able to capture the moments in life that everyone wants to remember. My primary interest in photography is to learn how to use a camera. If you don’t see me playing with flowers or taking pictures, I am most likely napping as that is my true number one hobby.
