Van Nuys High School students share their unfiltered opinions on the 2026 U.S.-Israel war on Iran. From calling the attacks “hypocritical” to questioning whether America had any business getting involved, these Los Angeles teens reflect a generation grappling with a conflict that erupted less than two weeks ago and is already reshaping the Middle East.

David Duncan, Opinion Editor
David Duncan, a freshman, is on the staff of The Mirror, the award-winning student newspaper and website at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles. Fueled by his love for the truth, Duncan is a first-time journalist working with the Opinion section. He loves spending his free time at home watching TV shows with his new cat, Happy. His favorite movie to watch with Happy is “All Quiet on the Western Front,” a gritty war film. Duncan has a true love of sports and cheers on the Ravens year after year. He is also a member of the wrestling team, where he works with his teammates to bring Van Nuys a CIF state championship for the first time. Paired with his strong love of the outdoors, he tries to make his community and the world a better place. Duncan spends the rest of his time playing “Red Dead Redemption 2” and traveling with his family. After high school, he wants to explore all of Europe, from the Baltic coasts to the Mediterranean Sea. He hopes to attend his dream college, Columbia University, and become an aerospace engineer.

Iona Hersh, Staff Writer
Iona Hersh, a senior, is on the staff of The Mirror, the award-winning student newspaper and website at Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles. For fun, she loves listening to music and reading, but most of all dancing. Hersh has been a classical dancer since she was 6 years old, so dance has been a core part of her life. She plans to remain in state for her undergraduate degree and pursue a career in the medical field. Her dream destination is Paris. The idea of divine bakeries and the brightly shining Eiffel Tower have been unforgettable fixations of hers since middle school. Hersh’s favorite movie of all time is “Frozen,” which has been on repeat since she was a little girl because of the remarkable visuals and details. She loves the independence displayed by Elsa, and her favorite season is winter, further contributing to her passion for the movie. A sport she enjoys watching is fencing. Watching the TV show “2521” inspired her interest in fencing, and the quick rounds drew her in to continue watching real tournaments.
