It’s been a rough week.
Since the release of the collaborative album “We Don’t Trust You” by rapper “Future” in early 2024, tensions between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake have grown gradually. In the past few days, everything has only gotten worse.
The track from the album that started the feud was “Like That” featuring Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Future and Metro Boomin.
In the track, Kendrick responds to “First Person Shooter” by Drake feat. J.Cole, the latter of which states:
To which Kendrick in “Like That” replies:
And continuing with dissing Drake’s album titled “For All The Dogs,” stating:
On April 5, a week after Kendrick’s track was released, J. Cole released “7 Minute Drill” in which he said that Kendrick Lamar’s discography “isn’t very good.”
Two days later, J. Cole publicly apologized to Kendrick Lamar during his show set at the Dreamville Festival, deleting the diss track five days later.
In response to the track, Drake released “Push Ups,” dissing Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd and Metro Boomin.
In this track, Drake calls out Kendrick Lamar for being short, claiming he’s weak and was never in the big three. He continues dissing Metro Boomin by stating:
On May 5, in response to Drake, Metro made some drums with the beat track “Bbl Drizzy,” making fun of the memes where he’s called Bbl Drizzy, in which he appears feminine.
Let’s not forget that Metro’s been going wild with posts about Drake on X, with some directed towards him somewhere along the lines like, “I knowwww a man wit lip scars not trynna call me lame (laughing emojis)” following by a meme photoshop picture of Drake. This traces back to the rumors that Drake supposedly got lipo to obtain abs. Also: “this sh** is so easy cause all I gotta do is post sh** YOU already put on #zestyman” followed by a picture of the infamous Drake bbl meme picture to make fun of him.
Kendrick couldn’t stay quiet, so he released the most talked about diss track, “Euphoria,” which states:
Four days later, he released “6:16 in LA.”
Of course, Drake responded with two diss tracks released simultaneously titled “Family Matters” and “Buried Alive Parody.” which is the title of a track Drake and Kendrick released together in 2011 under Drake’s album “Take Care.”
In these tracks, Drake talks about Kendrick being a fake activist and being violently abusive to his wife.
On the same day, Kendrick hit Drake with the last two diss tracks titled “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us” in which he called Drake a deadbeat, a womanizer, a pedophile, having a daughter running around the world, an alcoholic and more.
This “beef” just became public, but it’s been going on behind closed doors for almost a decade now.
As a fan of both artists, it hurts to see them hate each other this much. Seeing people compare these artists just because they fall under the same genre hurts.
To say I hope they reconcile and get back in the studio together seems farfetched. Nonetheless, I do hope they can settle their issues, and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been enjoying the new music that has come out of this feud.
But now, whose side are you on?
