“The Selection” by Kiera Cass, the first book to the dystopian romance series that will leave you yearning for the rest of the books instantly.
“The Selection” takes place in a caste based society, where America Singer lives. America is unexpectedly nominated to compete in a contest to win the affection of Prince Maxon and become potential future queen. America has a significant other and is apprehensive about participating in the contest, but out of familial duty, she competes.
She soon discovers that participating in the contest is stressful. America is competing against other intense and dramatic girls in the contest. She begins to form friendship with Prince Maxon, which begins to alter her feelings about him. To make her situation more precarious, the palace is under attack. America must navigate her heart’s desires.
America’s honest and blunt nature has often made her face repercussions. She is strong as well. In the beginning, she assumed, along with everyone, that Prince Maxon was just another spoiled aristocrat. But he proved to be rather nice. The other contesting girls add layers of drama.
The competitive spirit among characters brings out their many lovable and some utterly annoying qualities. It is a wonderful story of love, social class and finding your way. It’s about how people respond and adjust to their situational environments, which is interesting. The simplistic style makes the writing easy to read. It is also very relationship and drama centric.
“The Selection” is a light drama with a competitive story. In particular, I’d recommend it to audiences with an interest in romantic love triangles. It is not a story of any great depth, but it is a captivating story which does not challenge the reader too much. “The Selection” is very easy to put down, but it is best suited to those looking for light but engaging literature. It’s an easy 8/10 for me.
