With bright smiles, the girls basketball team lines up for a team photo after their win against Panorama.

The bottom line | The girls basketball team battled the Panorama Pythons on Senior Night on Wednesday, Jan. 31, and triumphed with an amazing score of 66-15.

Highlights |

  • The seniors celebrated were Melanie Contreras (#35), Bella Mokhtari (#33) and Cara Dechathong (#40). The rest of the team showed their love by hanging posters all over the gym with appreciative comments and special photos on them.
  • The first three points were scored by Karen Grewal (#5) with an assist from Cara Dechathong.
  • The team had a spectacular first quarter where they showed their dominance against the Pythons by scoring 31 points and leaving Panorama in the dust by leaving them with only three points.
  • Many amazing two-point shots were made by freshman Kenya Perryman (#54) in all four quarters.
  • Jazmin Ruiz (#21) made many defensive steals all throughout the game, but she shined especially bright during the third quarter with her amazing defense.
  • Seniors Melanie Contreras and Bella Mokharti provided a great defense. Although they did not get much playing time, they still played to the best of their abilities during the time that they did have.

Points scored each quarter |

Q1: VNHS 31, PHS 3

Q2: VNHS 18, PHS 3

Q3: VNHS 6, PHS 7

Q4: VNHS 11, PHS 2

What’s Next | The team does not have any more games left in its season.

Team thoughts | “The team was in the gym since lunch decorating for senior night and in the end it came out to look great, it was also a great way to say bye to our seniors,” sophomore junior varsity player Angie Volpe said.

Our thoughts | Celebrating their seniors was an amazing way for girls basketball to close off their last home game of the season. The team ended their season with an astonishing record of 16 wins and two losses, an impressive ending compared to last season’s end record of 13 wins and 15 losses. Hopefully, the team will be able to make it to playoffs.

For the books |

  • 16 wins, 2 losses
  • Panorama High School

About the Contributor
Isabel Valles, Athletics Editor
Through participating in multiple sports writing competitions, I was able to prove my commitment to the class and was chosen to become sports editor in my second year of journalism. My love for sports writing came around the time my love for sports developed around 6 years ago. Another thing I love about writing about sports is being able to inform and catch up readers about games that they may have missed. Currently I play three sports, flag football, track and field, and basketball. After high school I plan on attending either the University of Pennsylvania or the University of Santa Cruz. My goal for this year as editor is to become a better leader and learn from any mistakes that I might make in the process.
