The bottom line | The Van Nuys High School football team faced off against the Del Oro Suns on Sept. 8 and proved dominant, shutting them out 47-0.

Highlights

  • Marlon Figeroa (#11) not only made the first touchdown, but scored three others by a run play.
  • Wolves quarterback Nathan Olivera (#9) scored the final touchdown by cruising through the Sun’s defense into the end zone.
  • Pedro Perez (#50) racked up two extra points by tackling the Suns quarterback in their own endzone.
  • Left tackle Oscar Renderos (#72) racked up three pancake blocks, giving Nathan Olivera a clear chance to score.

What’s next

After a blowout game against Del Oro following substantial losses to both Verdugo Hills and Hollywood, the team will have to overcome their inconsistent performance so far and really put in the sweat and tears to beat Panorama High at home on Sept. 22.

Team thoughts

“We really put up a fight — gave it our all.” said defense player Nasim Abdul-Malik. “In the last game I really felt like we gave up, especially towards halftime. With this game I’m sure we are ready for the leagues, but we do have to stay humble.”

Word on campus

“The team has improved a lot since their last game,” said Danielle Quesada. “I remember thinking during halftime that we are gonna win for sure.”
