Van Nuys High host student led schedule debate

Sophomore and senior present opposing views at debate

TRUTH MATTERS… Donate to support excellence in student journalism

Following the announcement of Van Nuys High School’s decision to switch to a block-schedule rather than the typical six period schedule, many students began to choose sides on which schedule was the better fit for the school. This passionate topic ultimately translated into the topic for ASB’s winter debate, held during lunch on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Sophomore Sumaiya Moon debated senior Dwayne Famenia, sharing their opposing views on the topic.

While Moon found that the block-schedule would be a positive change that allowed students to choose from a larger variety of classes while enjoying electives and completing graduation requirements, Famenia disagreed.

Tickets were available on pre-sale for $1, ultimately doubling if purchased at the door.

Numerous teachers, such as English teacher Ms. Greenwood and math teacher Mr. Kim offered extra credit for students who attended.

With both sides managing to share their perspectives cordially, the debate was yet another success for ASB, marking the second bi-annual debate of the school year.

Alyson Cerna is The Mirror’s News and Features Editor. As a sophomore in her second year in journalism, there is nothing she enjoys more than laying down with a single airpod in and blasting music as she writes. She'd be lying if she ever pinpointed a single music genre to be her favorite, but nothing is the same as enjoying the album "THE FIRST TIME" by The Kid Laroi. Her obsession with the “Nightmare Before Christmas" might be what many consider eccentric, but she likes it that way—as no amount of stuffed animals, figurines and clothes could ever cure this. After high school, she plans to pursue a degree in sports journalism at UCLA.
