More Community College Classes to Be Offered on LAUSD High School Campuses

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board signed an agreement with the Los Angeles Community College District on Sept. 21 that will allow high schools to enter into partnerships with local community colleges to offer college courses to high school students on high school campuses during the school day.

Although some high schools already have community college classes on their campuses, this new agreement would allow all LAUSD students to begin taking these classes in the spring.

Last year, around 4,000 students were enrolled concurrently, taking some community college classes at their high school or on community college campuses. This agreement would expand the program.

Van Nuys High School currently partners with Los Angeles Valley College to provide an advanced speech class during 1st period everyday for the Fall semester.

“As long as it doesn’t compete with our AP program. I have no problem with it,” commented Ms. Mary Charlton, the Van Nuys High School College Counselor.

The purpose of working with community colleges is to introduce new subjects to all students, in addition to the Honors and Advanced Placement classes that many LAUSD high schools currently offer.

LAUSD projects that the new program will serve as many as 15,000 students each year.
