It all started with an idea — to bring together a group of remarkable people.

“Avengers: Infinity War” is the most highly anticipated movie of the year and marks the 19th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise.

Based on the Marvel comics created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the adaptation is directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, who are known for their collective works on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

The sequel presents a large ensemble of beloved characters and an all-star cast, including Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chadwick Boseman as Prince T’Challa/Black Panther, Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spiderman and Josh Brolin as Thanos.

The fate of the universe lies in the hands of Earth’s mightiest heroes and their allies when the evil mad titan, Thanos, and the Black Order seek to complete the collection of the six infinity stones, powerful ingots that possess extraordinary power and represent different aspects of the universe: Space, Reality, Power, Mind, Time and Soul. Once his collection is complete, Thanos can shape reality and wipe out half of all life in the universe.

Although the Avengers are broken up following the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” the team has no choice but regroup together and ally with other forces, including Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy — all to end Thanos’ endgame.

“Avengers: Infinity War” keeps the audience on the edge of their seats as it presents an overwhelming rollercoaster ride of emotions, consisting of equitable elements that revolve around drama, comedy and romance.

The dark, suspenseful and well-written storyline is dramatic from start to finish as the fates of the Avengers and their allies are tested while they face their most powerful enemy yet. The film disregards a set up and jumps right into an intense opening of loss and destruction, ending with a jaw-dropping and tear-jerking cliffhanger.

The movie features hilarious character interactions, including playful banter between Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as Iron Man and Doctor Strange. However, the comedic tone heavily centers on Drax, who appears to be the fan-favorite comic relief among the superhero roster, as he continues to deliver hilarious one-liners to his peers as he normally does in his previous movies.

The film delivers the feeling of love and intimacy, specifically between Vision and Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, two powerful beings who flee away from the Avengers to live their normal lives with each other. However, the situation becomes upsetting as Thanos attempts to steal the mind stone — which is what keeps Vision alive. Meanwhile, the relationship between Peter Quill and Gamora gets rocky and emotional as they encounter Thanos — her adoptive father.

Originally appearing in the post-credits scene of “The Avengers,” Thanos is not an average MCU villain. The purple mad titan appears to be one of the greatest antagonists formally introduced since Loki in “Avengers” and Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther.” Rather than inflicting his own selfish desires, he believes his motive is for the greater good — which is to decimate half of the universe’s population in order to retain stability and control. One can sympathize with Thanos as the film explores his complex character and “fatherly” persona towards his two adoptive trained assassin children, Gamora and Nebula.

The CGI effects are impressive as the movie displays appealing fictional settings across the cosmic universe and stunning intergalactic entities, including a terrifying team of villainous aliens and a talking raccoon. The visual effects also captures the heroes’ remarkable superhuman abilities and weaponry, including Thor’s lightning bolts, Doctor Strange’s mystical energy, Iron Man’s Bleeding Edge armor and Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet.

However, every film has its minor flaws.

Although “Infinity War” is the biggest superhero crossover event, there are a few fan-favorite characters who do not appear in the film at all, which is a little disappointing. Some of the movie’s characters are also underused, and the film lacks to provide them their full potential.

Despite its small imperfections, the film successfully lives up to its hype and leaves audiences astonished and speechless. Fans left the theaters with more unanswered questions and newly formed hypotheticals — which will be answered next year when the fourth “Avengers” installment debuts.

The 10-year and 18-film culmination is based on the six-issue comic book series, “The Infinity Gauntlet,” published by Marvel Comics in 1992.

“Avengers: Infinity War” earned a Certified Fresh Tomato Score of 84% in Rotten Tomatoes and a 9.2/10 on IMDb, the Internet Movie Database.

Meanwhile, fans are still stoked for the upcoming Marvel film, “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which will premiere in theaters on July 6.
